Rumors have been circulating widely about recently proposed gold mining on the Osa Peninsula. In an attempt to shed light and a new perspective on the proposed gold exploration, CAVU conducted an overflight and took GPS-embedded aerial photographs of the region with Friends of the Osa on Friday, January 22nd.
Here are the facts.
On Tuesday, Dec. 8, CAVU, together with partners Healthy Reefs Initiative, Conservation International/MMAS and the Association of Protected Areas Management Organization (APAMO) of Belize, kicked off its campaign with an all-day roundtable conference held at the Radisson Hotel in Belize City.
In mid-November, CAVU sent a crew to Nicaragua to begin the filming of Entre Lago y Mar, the latest CAVU documentary. The film will focus on the narrow, 12-mile ribbon of land between the vast Lake Nicaragua and the Pacific Ocean, a crucial land bridge and corridor for species that migrate between North and South America. The region also harbors remnant dry tropical forest, an increasingly rare ecosystem in Latin America.
On November 9, 2009 CAVU and INCOPESCA began a multi-year project aimed at conserving Costa Rica's fisheries through the establishment of Responsible Fishing Areas in the Gulf of Nicoya.
On October 20, 2009 the first large public screening of CAVU'S most recent film project, 'Playas Calientes, Olas Furiosas', created in partnership with World Wildlife Fund, was shown to a packed theater in downtown San Jose.

Though there’s still time – saving the reef from the effects of unplanned development, uncontrolled tourism, over-fishing and climate change is no small task.

Executive Director Jordan Vaughan Smith spent November 11-15, 2008 in Belize to celebrate, learn about and plan for the future of Belize's jewel: the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. The visit centered on continued planning for CAVU's 2009 Outreach Campaign for the reef and coastal zones.

Educating Decision-makers
On September 25, 2008, CAVU flew The Nature Conservancy, representatives of Costa Rica’s Ministry of the Environment (MINAE) Osa Conservtion Area (ACOSA) and members of the Tribunal Ambiental over the Osa Peninsula.
In May, CAVU worked with the Wildlife Conservation Society, Belize Audubon and the Panthera Foundation to create a local outreach campaigned aimed at identifying the result of 25 years of maintaining a Jaguar Preserve in the Cockscomb
Saturday the 12th of April CAVU and TNC hosted and event in Bahía, where the film "Nuestras Aguas, Nuestra Vida" was premiered. More than 300 people attended the open event.
The Sun Valley Leadership Institute, represented by Dr. Anne Marie White was recently accompanying CAVU during the first stages of 2008´s first production. Her feedback and advise was of great value to our growing organization.

After the pressure from local groups in the South and other organizations (including CAVU´s aerial photographs), the construction of terraces was stopped near the Sierpe lagoon.
The San Francisco Ocean Film Festival will take place from February 1st till the 7th, and on its 5th edition it is featuring CAVU´s latest film: "Higher Ground".
"Voces del Darien", a film about the people and natural wealth of Darien, has been selected as an official feature film of the Greendance Film Festival, which takes place in California, USA.
For the week between the 23rd and the 30th of January, the first half of CAVU´s film "Higher Ground" will be broadcasted online, on www.lifeonterra.com.

CAVU’s major focus the last six months has been on the finalization of its project in Darién, Panama, which will culminate with the distribution the film “Voces del Darién.”
This film features the work and trajectory of CAVU´s founder: David Smith. Feature airs on Saturday the 13th of October, on PBS.
